The Princess and The Salt Story

Once upon a time, in a kingdom far away, there lived a king with his three beautiful daughters. The King loved all his daughters equally, but he was curious to know which of them loved him the most. So, one day, he asked his daughters, “My dear princesses, tell me how much you love me?” The eldest daughter replied that she loved him as much as she loved gold, and the second daughter replied that she loved him as much as she loved diamonds. But the youngest daughter replied, “Father, I love you as much as I love salt.”

The King was furious at his youngest daughter’s response. He felt insulted and banished her to the forest. Heartbroken and alone, the princess wandered into the dense forest and felt lost.

Suddenly, she heard a horse’s hooves galloping towards her. As she was frightened, she hid herself in the hollow of a tree. The horse halted near the tree, and a handsome young man alighted (to get off a). He was a wealthy merchant from a neighbouring kingdom. The merchant offered her shelter in his mansion. As time passed, they fell in love and soon got married.

One day, the King was out hunting and lost his way in the forest. He was tired and hungry when he reached the merchant’s mansion. The merchant recognized the King as his wife’s father but did not reveal his identity to the King. He offered him food and shelter.

The princess decided to cook for her father. But when the King took a bite, he realized that the food had no taste. Furious, he demanded to speak to the cook. To his surprise, he saw his youngest daughter standing before him. The princess said, “Father, the food has no taste because it has no salt. Without salt, our lives would be terrible. Do you understand now how much I love you?”
